One Missing Tooth: The Real Options, Honestly Compared

Do nothing, bridge, denture or implant — the honest trade-offs of each option for a single missing tooth, and when waiting a while is genuinely fine.

Cyprus Dental guide: One Missing Tooth: The Real Options, Honestly Compared

Lose a single tooth — through extraction, an accident or a failed root canal — and you have four realistic options: leave the gap, fit a bridge, wear a partial denture, or place an implant. The right answer depends on where the gap sits, the state of the neighbouring teeth and your budget. Here is how the main missing tooth options compare, including the one dentists rarely discuss properly: doing nothing at all.

Doing nothing: what a gap quietly costs

The cheapest option upfront is no treatment, and in the short term that is often reasonable. Jawbone is maintained by the chewing forces that pass through a tooth root; once the root is gone, the bone beneath the gap gradually shrinks. Neighbouring teeth can drift or tilt into the space, and the opposing tooth may over-erupt, changing your bite.

None of this is an emergency. If you lost the tooth recently, a few months of waiting changes little — implant sites are often left to heal after an extraction anyway. A back molar in a stable bite that neither shows nor bothers you can sometimes be left indefinitely. Not every gap must be filled. The mistake is letting a temporary decision become ten years by default, until bone loss makes later treatment more involved and more expensive.

A bridge: fast, but the neighbours pay for it

A conventional bridge is fixed in place, needs no surgery and can be completed within a couple of weeks. The trade-off is permanent: the teeth either side of the gap are ground down to support it, and that healthy enamel never grows back. If those teeth are already heavily filled or crowned, that matters far less, and a bridge becomes a sensible choice. Two caveats remain: bridges often need replacing after ten to fifteen years, and the bone under the gap keeps shrinking, because nothing replaces the root.

A partial denture: cheapest to buy, hardest to love

A removable partial denture involves no drilling and costs the least of any active treatment. The compromises are daily: it can move when you eat or speak, its clasps rest on neighbouring teeth, it comes out at night, and it does nothing to slow bone loss. As a temporary measure while you heal or save, it does a job; as a permanent answer, few people stay happy with one.

An implant: the closest thing to the tooth you lost

An implant replaces the missing root itself — the only option here that does. It loads the bone and helps preserve it, leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched, and is cleaned like a natural tooth — usually the first recommendation when the teeth either side are healthy. The trade-offs are real: minor surgery, a healing period of roughly three to six months before the final crown, and a higher upfront price. Not everyone is suitable — heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes or thin bone all need proper assessment first, and where bone has already been lost, grafting is quoted separately after a scan.

Cost is where geography matters. A single implant with crown typically runs £2,000–£2,500 in the UK and €2,400–€3,000 in Ireland. At Cyprus Dental in Kyrenia, North Cyprus, a single implant starts from €550 (about £475), using German-manufactured implant systems, with the brand and lot number of every implant recorded and given in writing. Placement takes one short visit of a few days; the final crown follows on a second visit after healing. The full breakdown is in our implant cost guide and on our prices page. One honest note if you are weighing up travel: we are a private clinic regulated in North Cyprus, not registered with the UK GDC — we set out what that means on our important information page.

How to decide

Ask three questions. Is the gap visible, or affecting how you chew? Are the neighbouring teeth healthy, or already heavily restored? Are you choosing for the next few years, or for decades? Pristine neighbours and a long horizon point towards an implant; already-crowned neighbours give a bridge a fair hearing; a tight budget makes a denture a reasonable way to buy time — provided you keep an eye on the bone.
